Sunday round up 31/01/2016

So, it is finally here. The end of January. I think I speak for us all when I say. THANK. GOODNESS!

It’s been 6 long weeks of ‘dry January, or ‘Veganuary‘ and all sorts of other efforts people make to change their lifestyle habits for the better. As you probably know, I haven’t participated in either this year – but I have been keeping an eye out on the experiences of others. And feel like I have learnt some lessons (all be them vicarious) in the process. Here’s my round-up of January happenings…

 

Veganisim is probably on the rise. You know I love meat. And cheese. And eggs. But, saying that, I also love meat-free feasts on a regular basis too. And do make a conscious effort not to overindulge when it comes to eating meat (for reasons related to health, budget and sustainability). Brighton-based food blogger Cate in the Kitchen went on a Vegan-adventure this January. It was very interesting to watch. She came up with some cracking recipes and also failed quite epically one on occasion when she ate a cheese burger with all the toppings from Meat Liquor. Very entertaining indeed. Catch up here.

Food waste is still a trending food topic. It’s still making the headlines. It’s still a huge issue. And I can’t tell you enough how much I absolutely hate food waste. In an attempt to minimise food waste in my house, I have started to use Google Sheets to plan meals, build my shopping list and make use of things I already have in the cupboards/fridge/freezer before buying more. These efforts, along with online shopping, are so far working well to keep food waste in my house to a minimum. Pescatarianism kind of sort of appeals to me. A little bit. Watching Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Food Fight this week made me really crave seafood. As did my visit to the Seafood Pub Co. I eat seafood quite often as I really do love it. But I don’t incorporate it into my diet regularly enough. This week I have ordered some mackerel, seabass and have cod and king prawns in my meal plan for the week so will be experimenting with some new recipes. Whether or not I can give up meat to go entirely pescatarian, however, is another matter. But a damn sight easier than veganism! That’s for sure.

Giving up booze is one thing. But moaning about it… is another. I’m sure giving up booze for January is a great way to detox and lose a few pounds. But I have seen so many people on Twitter (and in person) moaning about it. IF YOU WANT A GLASS OF WINE JUST HAVE ONE!

And finally… I booked a holiday. A trip to Northern Italy. To flounce around eating red meat and carbs and cheese and drinking the finest of wines. And I can’t bloody wait.

The Italian Awards come to Manchester

So, the day is almost here. Tomorrow is the day I finally get to meet Michael and the team in person – the organisers of The Italian Awards UK. In their own words;

Exciting concept, right? Well, this year, 2015, is the very first time The Italian Awards are coming to Manchester. Usually based out of Glasgow, the awards are a spectacular event celebrating all things Italian food in the UK. I’m am delighted to tell you that I have been chosen as an official blogger for the awards. I will be helping Michael and the team along with Taste Today and a few other great bloggers from the Manchester area. The awards themselves are set for September this year…Very exciting times!

I should also tell you that they have a celebrity judge on board, who joined them last year in Scotland and will again this year in our very own Manchester… The one and only Aldo Zilli! (@AldoZilli on Twitter). If you don’t already know, Aldo Zilli is an award winning celebrity Italian chef and restaurateur. He was the founder and chef-patron of some of London’s most exciting and innovative restaurants, Signor Zilli, Zilli Fish, Zilli Green, Zilli Café and Zilli Bar. He has also done consultancy work to help out other famous Italian restaurants such as Prezzo, and he has released many fantastic Italian cookery books. He’s also done countless TV appearances, and in 2012, he helped launch the upmarket Italian restaurant San Carlo Cicchetti in Manchester and London’s Piccadilly. He is now in partnership with San Carlo Group, who have 14 restaurants in the UK and four overseas. IMPRESSIVE!

The Great British Cook Book

The Great British Cook Book

Fellow Foodies, listen up! This is big news, and something I have been waiting to share with you all for a few weeks now, but hence my busy work schedule and holiday to Gran Canaria it’s taken me a while for me to get the chance… I hope after reading you’re as excited as I am about this carefully crafted thing of foodie beauty!

I have received some exclusive information about an innovative new cook book, set for release later this month. It’s been years in the making and is aptly named: The Great British Cook Book.  The makers behind the book have undertaken a nationwide search to find 200 different and diverse dishes from the 10 regions of Great Britain. The book is a celebration of our diversified nation and features a variety of Chefs, styles and foods to please any pallet.

The book will include 20 recipes from each of the 10 areas of the Great British Isles, which include London and the South, the North West,  Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. One thing that really caught my attention, is that the book does not purely feature ‘AA Rosette’ or ‘Michelin Star’ restaurants/Chefs but will cover a range of different venues that are passionate about food, use innovative and inspiring recipes with locally-sourced produce.

Another great element to the book is that it has been joined by some real household names such as; Rick Stein, Michael Caines and Nigella Lawson (to name a few). Adam Simmonds (Great British Menu winner 2014) is the books main ambassador, stated;

“When the guys first came to me a few years ago, I knew nothing of this magnitude had been done before and was instantly hooked on the concept, the support from the Chef world has been truly amazing!”

Gary Allen, Project Director for the book also quoted:

“We wanted to combine our love of food and some of the amazing Chefs and food producers we have come across through the years of working in the industry. The book has a real commitment to raising awareness on using local and sustainable produce where possible, just like some of the reader’s favourite chefs and restaurants. All book sales will be donated to Macmillian Cancer support and Hospitality Action.”

The book will feature 50 starters, 100 mains and 50 desserts as well as 10 in-depth features of unique and traditional trades in the UK. Some areas covered are Butchery, Fishmongers, Baking and Home Growing; offering a rare insight into how these traditional trades work in our modern society.

I really feel this book is going to take us fellow foodies on the ultimate food journey, through a culinary array of cooking techniques, flavours and produce origins. The makers of the book have done all the hard work, so readers just need to kick-back and enjoy the detail presented, and hopefully cook and share the recipes for years to come.

Over the course of the next 2 weeks, I will be posting further information about the North West based contributors to the book, before it’s release on the 20th November, so watch this space!
